Gameplay is all about your micromanagement skills and hinges on the building of rooms (diagnosis, treatment, toilets, staff rooms and beyond), the hiring of staff and the research and curing of patients. All fairly simple game mechanics that let you explore each and every level without being confused by what you need to do to progress. Curing patients of the comical complaints = good spending all your cash and letting your patients die = bad.

Starting off in a small site with only a handful of diseases including the iconic ‘Bloaty Head’ condition, your success is based on the number of patients cured (whilst minimising deaths), the value of your hospital, the happiness of your patients and your overall bank balance.

It focussed on the construction and micromanagement of a variety of hospitals with each level adding extra difficulty on top of the last – plus a wonderful smattering of eccentric yet timeless humour. TH was, in a thematic sense, a successor to the huge popular Theme Park. Theme Hospital was, and in ways I’ll come to later is still, both great fun and quaintly humorous.
